Our History
In 1953, an all volunteer organization named The Orange County Citizens Safety Council was formed as a non-profit 501(c)3. At the time, the Council’s primary focus was automobile safety, with the first class a driver's assistance program taught by volunteer, off-duty, Florida Highway Patrol officers.
The small organization grew rapidly. In 1955, to describe the territory served, the name of the organization was changed to the Central Florida Safety Council. As the Council expanded and established offices in Seminole, Osceola, Brevard and Lake Counties. Today, the Florida Safety Council is training over 80,000 students in classrooms located in twenty-four Florida counties. The Council’s Occupational Safety Department instructors also travel throughout the United States bringing their specialized safety courses to corporate America.
The Council’s mission is to promote safety in every phase of American life: On the Road, In the Workplace, In the Home and Schools. To accomplish all of this, in July 2010, relocated the headquarters to 1505 East Colonial Drive in Orlando. This centrally located building houses Administrative Services, Curriculum Development and comfortable state of the art classrooms.. FSC is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of prominent business and civic leaders who volunteer their time to create a safer community. Advisory committees are also utilized to provide program guidance.
In addition to Driver safety education, the Safety Council also provides Occupational Safety training designed to meet OSHA regulatory standards; and DUI Counterattack Programs for those arrested with alcohol or other substances while operating a vehicle. Over three million individuals have received safety and health related training enabling them to enhance the quality of life in the home, workplace, schools, and on our roadways. Today, FSC training centers are expanding beyond Central Florida by providing curriculum's for sub-agencies located throughout the state. Thanks to advanced technology, FSC has over 50 traffic and occupational safety related courses available on the Internet for those seeking a safer environment throughout the world. We now have students completing safety training courses from all over the U.S. and from as far away as South America, Europe, and Asia through our parent organization, The United Safety Council.
What does the Florida Safety Council do?
Driver Improvement Programs:
Promoting traffic safety is the cornerstone of the FSC’s education and training initiatives. Driver Improvement Programs are designed to encourage safe and courteous driving habits by enhancing defensive driving abilities and awareness.
FSC also offers a variety of driver improvement programs for individuals, truck drivers, mature drivers, and motorcycle operators. One-on-one driving lessons, and high school style driver education programs are also provided. Additionally, FSC provides the 4 hour Traffic Law, Substance Abuse Education course named Drug & Alcohol Traffic Awareness (D.A.T.A.). Since 1990, the course has been required for all Florida first-time driver license applicants. DUI Offenders suggested the program to prevent future DUI’s.

D.U.I. Programs:
FSC’s DUI Programs are aimed at reviewing and changing the behaviors of offenders; thereby reducing the risk of future DUI related arrests, injuries, and deaths. State certified evaluators and instructors are responsible for helping each client understand the issues related to risk reduction. The DUI Program is licensed by the Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) to provide services in Brevard, Orange, Osceola, and Seminole Counties.
Occupational Safety Training:
FSC offers a wide variety of safety courses and seminars designed to meet OSHA standards in the workplace. These interactive courses and seminars provided by the United Safety Council offer opportunities for shared ideas, discussion of problems and safe solutions. FSC also sponsors safety and education forums for the community. The FSC is an approved OSHA Training Institute Host Site and is an approved provider for the Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (C.O.S.S) program.
Youth Related Programs:
Recognizing the community need for courses to address the driving behaviors and other issues facing our youth, FSC created programs targeting drivers and passengers under the age of 25.
Specialty and Online Programs:

Public Education & Awareness:
FSC promotes safety and mishap prevention through its speakers bureau, literature, and multi-media public awareness campaigns.
How is the Florida Safety Council funded?
As a private, not-for-profit and non-governmental organization, The Florida Safety Council receives funding through course fees, corporate memberships, safety product sales, grants, and contributions.
